Sunday afternoon, March 8th, I was exiting my school library when I was faced with a line of police cars, flashing red-blue lights as officers set up barriers to block off the street. After a few minutes investigating, I managed to get the news out of two fellow students: the police were investigating a potential bomb threat within the area.
This was following the protests that broke out the day prior at Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s residence. A group of anti-Muslim protestors, led by far-right influencer Jake Lang, gathered, reflecting the spike in islamophobic hate speech and rhetoric following Zohran Mamdani’s election last year. In response, counterprotestors convened, turning the scene fraught with tension.
The protest quickly turned into disarray after two teenagers, Emir Balat (18) and Ibrahim Kayumi (19), launched homemade explosive devices into the crowd. The two are residents from Pennsylvania who claimed their inspiration came from ISIS, a terrorist organization; they intended to cause greater harm than during the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Both suspects were arrested and placed in federal custody, scheduled to appear in court on April 8th. The incendiary devices were filled with the highly explosive chemical triacetone triperoxide and bolts, and did not detonate. They were tested using controlled detonations, which resulted in significant explosions that could have resulted in greater harm and death, according to the NYPD.
A third device was located on Sunday, which was the scene I had stumbled onto. The police department was there to investigate a suspicious device within a vehicle related to the two suspected terrorists, shutting off the streets. They determined that it was non-explosive afterwards.
The mayor has restated the importance of allowing protests but condemned the racism and violence that occurred. The city has experienced high political tension recently, with deepening polarization that has escalated, exemplified by this event.
